How to Use a Lawn Mower
It is important to choose a lawn mower that will be compatible with the type of lawn being mowed. This can make a large difference in the quality of the mowed lawn. Using a lawn mower is important to maintain manicured grass and there are many things that we can do to ensure the grass is mowed healthily and all injuries are avoided.
There are two types of lawnmowers; reel and rotary. There are certain grasses far better when mowed with a specific type – based on the structure of the grass.
It is important to be able to judge when the lawn needs to be mowed. The lawn should be mowed when it is about a third higher than the recommended mowing height.
It is important to make sure that the mower has an adequate amount of fuel and that the blades are sharp enough to mow. Dull lawnmower blades injure the grass, leaving it susceptible to damage and disease.
It is important to change the mowing direction each time that the lawn is mowed. This will ensure that the grass has time to recuperate and will continue to grow in its normal patterns throughout the season.
Prior to the first use it is important to read the manual or guide provided. After the guide has been read and safety precautions have been taken examine the lawn for any objects that may be strewn into the air by the mower. Remove any items from the lawn such as rocks, toys, pebbles or pieces of wood. Children and pets should be away from the mower to avoid any risk of injury.
It is important to protect the body from injury from mowing. Feet are often the brunt of mower injuries and therefore it is important to wear boots or sturdy shoes. Steel toed shoes may prevent the blades from injuring the feet.
The grass should be dry before mowing. If the grass is wet than the grass will stick to the mower creating difficulties while mowing and cause mechanical difficulties with the mower.
The mower should be maintained to ensure that injuries will be avoided. A large percentage of injuries can be avoided with proper mower maintenance. It is important to inspect the mower at each time prior to use.
Before mowing, ensure that all safety measures are in place and that the operator is able to smoothly guide the mower. Self propelled mowers have different speeds and it is dangerous if the speed is too quick for the operator. In regards to manual or push mower, it is important the operator be strong enough to be able to push the mower. This is especially important if there is rough terrain or hills in the mowing area.
While mowing, switch the mower off before moving across sidewalks, driveways and other paths that are not made of grass. Never mow up a hill. If you are faced with a hill mow across the hill ensuring the mower does not fall backwards and injure the operator.
Never refuel the lawnmower while the engine is hot. Remember to fuel up before cutting to ensure optimum results. Fuelling the lawn while the mower is hot could create a backsplash of fuel and injure the mower operator.
The lawn should be mowed at least once every two weeks. Many people prefer to mow the lawn weekly during periods of high growth. During these periods of high growth many people choose to mow the lawn every week. Mowing the lawn weekly will ensure that the grass grows evenly and fully.
