Lawn Mower Buying Guide
There are five important factors when purchasing a lawn mower. A great lawn mower makes mowing more than a chore – it can turn it into a landscaping experience. Choosing the right lawn mower can also greatly affect the health of the grass.
Size
The sizes of lawn mower vary from the median of 20-22” to tractor or ride on size mowers. Generally if the lawn is larger than an acre it is recommended that the mower size is increased to tractor size. If the lawn is relatively small than a mower that is less than 20” would be suitable. Small mowers are easy to manoeuvre and simple to push but wider mowers decrease the time spent mowing.
Push Mower or Self Propelled
Push mowers are optimal for those who don’t mind additional physical activity but self propelled mowers can zip through the job. A self propelled mower enables the user to guide, rather than have to push the mower creating a simple mowing experience and enabling practically anyone to mow the lawn.
If purchasing a self-propelled mower it is important to distinguish the speeds. You must be comfortable moving at the speed of the mower, as you will be mowing – and guiding along with it.
Terrain
Specific terrains require different features. Larger wheels, higher mowers, and rear bags are important while mowing rugged terrain. Larger wheels will assist with the ease of pushing the mower. For rougher trains it is optimal to have a self-propelled mower which enables the user to guide, rather than push the mower. Using a higher mower will decrease the risk that it will become caught on low lying and rough terrain. A rear bag, rather than a side bag or a mulcher enables the mower to be propelled with ease rather than having more weight to bear while mowing.
Power
There are three types of lawnmowers available; electric, gasoline and battery powered. Electric mowers are plugged into the wall and often require a long, heavy duty extension cord. These extension cords may become troublesome when trying to manoeuvre around the lawn. It is a hazard for this cord to become cut – which could happen while accidentally running over the cord. Although the cord may be dangerous it supplies a constant power supply without the need to refill or recharge the source and they are the lightest and easiest to handle while mowing.
Battery powered mowers are difficult to use with large lawns as they last shorter than an hour. It is recommended that battery powered mowers be used on lawns less than 10,000 square feet – as the charger may run out of power before the job is complete. The only thing worse than mowing the lawn, is having the job interrupted to charge the battery!
Gasoline powered lawn mowers are the most common and easiest to use. Gas mowers self propel meaning that it is easier to push the mower, and the operator merely has to guide the mower through the yard. Gas mowers are the least friendly to the environment and create emissions in the air. Gas may also be hazardous to store – all of these are options to keep in mind while buying a lawn mower.
Features
Features that come with the mower can be overwhelming. It is important to buy a lawn mower that has standard and reliable features rather than gimmicky or difficult to use features that aren’t practical. Adhere to the basic needs of your lawn and you will find a mower suitable for your needs.
It is important to research before buying a lawn mower. This is a large purchase that ranges from as little as $200.00 upwards of $5000.00 for the ride on variety! Be sure to visit a few retailers and ask questions about the models that you are considering before deciding on a purchase.
